强制改变业习之苦

改变业习要经历一个漫长的过程。因为业习是久远以来所养成的习惯,具有很大的力量,一时要改变是很困难的。很多人不知道这种一时改变业习的想法是多么强制。比如我们的俱生我执、识心认知等习惯都是多生累劫的习气,要逼迫习气立马改变,基本上很难做到。

现在我们很多人还有一种习惯认知,认为学习觉悟者就是要改变自己,还要改变别人。这种一时与久远的对抗,会造成冲突。对立的心,让人很痛苦。

我们应该学习的是觉悟者的方法——直接从表相来透视本质,了知万事万物是无有实质的,是缘生缘灭的,是不可得的。这是一个很重要也很调柔的方法。

一定要知道这一点——我们想改变自己或者想改变别人,用一时的勇猛心去撞击厚重的习气,其结果就是对抗,就会造成痛苦。

在日常生活中我们很容易对自己不满,要求自己做出改变,同时也会苛求别人,一旦自己或者他人未能改变,就会产生苦恼。我们经常会听到有人说“我真是不能再贪睡了!真不能再贪吃了!真不能这样了!真不能那样了!但我就是改变不了自己!”实际他不知道,这种久远的习气十分厚重,把人障得严严实实的,越去冲击它,它就反弹得越厉害。

其实,我们不必过多地在习气的业相上着力,而应去关注它的本质,了解它是虚幻、无常的,是即显即解脱的。如果我们可以耐心、调柔地安住于此,就能让习气在不知不觉中转换、消融。反之,如果我们在日常生活中过于关心生活小节,把自己、他人的习气毛病盯得太紧,就会制造很多不必要的问题和苦恼。

以一时之猛对治久远习气,实为不易。明白习气是一个长期累积的事相和作用力,我们就不在这个地方用功夫了。

现在的人常说:零点起飞!若想真正把问题解决掉,就要从零开始——彻底回归心性本源之清净,顺性而为,不良习气就会自然消解。这样,我们就能走出强迫自他改变的习惯,安然、随顺、善巧地去面对和解决自己的生死大事。

The harmfulness of changing people’s habits

It is time consuming and requires lots of effort to change a habit as it is something that has been gradually cultivated for a long time. Habits are so powerful that it is very difficult to have them adjusted all of a sudden.

Many of us are still used to thinking that since they are learning from an enlightened master they not only need to change themselves but also the others. The conflict existing between this momentary urge and the long-time cultivated habit causes confrontation in our mind. And affliction arises.

What we ought to learn from the enlightened is to grasp the essence of every phenomenon, understanding that the innate essence of everything is not substantial, is dependent on the rise and fall of conditions and causes and is ultimately unobtainable; and this can be regarded as a significant and gentle way of practicing our mind.

We must thoroughly understand this issue. If our momentary urge of changing ourselves or others plays against our strong and long-time cultivated habits, we will suffer from the resulting conflict.

In daily life, we easily get upset with ourselves, then we force ourselves to change meanwhile getting overtly critical of others. I often hear people saying ‘I really cannot sleep in that late’, ‘seriously I need to stop being food greedy’, ‘I cannot be like this, really I can’t! ‘But I just can’t change myself’! As a matter of fact, people don’t know these habits are so strong that they have completely restricted us. The fiercer we hit our habit, the stronger it will bounce back. We would get so upset once we found out that neither ourselves nor others would be changed as we wish.

Indeed, it is unnecessary for us to spend too much of our energy on our habit itself, rather we need to focus on its essence and enlighten ourselves by the fact that its nature is beyond existence and is impermanent. The moment our habits are at work is just the right moment that we could liberate ourselves from it. Then we have all the reason to be patient, soft-minded and enjoy the comfort of being in present.In this way we will be able to have the phenomenon shifted and dissolved imperceptibly. On the contrary if we focus too much on the details in life, it will become hard to let go of habits for ourselves and others; a lot of unnecessary problems and troubles will be created.

It is, indeed, not that obviously easy to fight back against long formed habits in a momentary urge. But once we are aware that a habit is merely a phenomenon getting strength after a long-time accumulation, we will stop forcing anyone.

There is a common saying: ‘To start from zero’. If we wish to solve the problem thoroughly we really need to start from point zero that is to say to bring ourselves back to the purity of origin of our heart and go with the flow of our essential nature. Those bad habits will naturally weaken. As an outcome we will be less and less habituated of forcing self and others to change; we could face and deal with big issues in life with a peaceful, gentle and skilful heart.
