Game of Memory
The memory of our contaminated consciousness often stains the inherent purity, splits up the intrinsic perfection, and constrains the innate unhindered nature of our heart, just like a tree that shields us from seeing the woods and make us lose each present beauty.
Memory is the accumulation of habits and the continuation of the contaminated consciousness as well. We can no longer think or endure without the accumulated consciousness. That is because when you think, you need something to refer to, such as your past, your habits, your memory and what others have done to you, etc. We are reluctant to think without references. And therefore we are always pushed to act by our contaminated consciousness.
Unlike us, a sage uses the inherent pure nature of our own, the pure consciousness, to observe the world directly. For him, there is neither repetition nor accumulation of his past memory, and therefore he will never lose any present newness, freedom, peace or happiness. So it’s very important to often keep the Buddha in mind. Let the merits, wisdom and compassion of Buddha as well as his body, speech and mind be our own memory or even the highlights in our memory, and develop this as our habit. Thus we will be fully aware of whether we lose our right mindfulness or not whenever a thought arises.
【Editor’s Note from Robin】
While following our Master Cifa and learning Buddhism from him, very often I cannot help being moved by his targeted instructions and benefit a lot from them. Now, with a sincerely offering heart for you my fellow practitioners, I’d like to try as much as I can to share his instructions with all of you that I have recorded and sorted out. They each mainly are about how to observe some problem we notice from a specific angle in our everyday life, and I hope that we can learn by analog to observe and enlighten our whole life, so as, according to dharma, to arouse us to start using the inherent pure Buddha-nature as our wonderful arising condition, and make our life to be more beautiful, richer and more colorful.
