弟子:当我烦恼的时候,我知道这是习惯的反复,但内心不愿意改变它,因为我觉得改变它我更烦恼。
师父:这是习惯的抵触。
弟子:改变它我更烦恼,还不如不改呢。我意识到了习惯,但我又不想改变它,怎么办?
师父:没问题,习惯是一种势力,它有势、有力量。就像我们开车一样,有惯性,要不然就没有惯性的那个力量。习惯、势力这两个词一定要连到一起。
我要改变习惯——本身就是病!这个病在哪儿呢?你认为有可改变的东西,你违背了万事万物的本质是没有实质的,你违背了这个事实,你动念就出病了!
所以烦恼即菩提最重要,就治你这个病。你把习惯当成实有的,你要改变它,那这个“有”就会起作用。
了解万事万物的本质是没有实质的,是无自性的,这个要用。知道这个习惯没有自性,就不是病了,这就是健康的,叫正思维。正思维就会产生正语、正行。
你这个“想改变自己”,这本身就是不正语、不正行。不正语是不正见带来的,那不正行是必然的。
“我想改变它,我更难受”,这本身就是不正语、不正行的一个指导,本身就是个病,有所得的病,这个病就是不正见。你一动念,这个病就出来了。

The power of habits
Student: When I am upset, I know my habit comes back but I am reluctant to change it, because changing it makes me more upset.
Master: This is the resistance of the habit that entraps you.
Student: I am getting more upset when I try to change it. So I am better off not changing at all. The situation is that I recognize the habit but don’t want to change it. What can I do now?
Master: No problem. A habit is a power, which has momentum and force. Just like when we drive, there is inertia. Habit has power of inertia as well, so changing a habit is not easy.
”I want to change my habits” – the idea itself is a problem. When you think there truly exists a habit that can be changed, you go against the fact that everything is illusory in nature. You have already created a problem once you intend to change a habit.
So the dharma of “the upset is without any essence” is the exact recipe for your problem. When you think your habit as truly existing, this “existing” will take effect into resistance when you try to change it.
Let us practice to use the dharma that everything has no substantial essence. Habit also has no self-essence. This is what we call “right view”, which leads to right speech and right actions.
“I want to change myself”, which, in itself, is a wrong speech that is generated from the wrong view. So the following wrong actions are inevitable.
It makes no sense to change a habit that is without essence. Therefore “I am getting more upset when I want to change it” is a wrong speech. It shows that you have a wrong view. Once you want to change the habit, the problem is created.
